Why Choose Kynar 500®?

What is a 70% Kynar 500® Coating?

Kynar 500® (PVDF) is a high quality resin used by licensed industrial paint manufacturers as the base resin in long-life paint coatings for aluminum, galvanized steel, and galvalume or zincalume steel. PVDF stands for PolyVinylidine Fluoride and is known as ‘Kynar’ or more properly, Kynar 500®. Kynar 500® is not a finished paint but a trade name for PVDF resin.

When the PVDF resin is formulated into a coating composition, 70% of its paint resin is made of Kynar 500® or Hylar 5000®. This resin, with its extraordinary capability to retain color and gloss, keeps painted metal looking vibrant and appealing. It meets a higher performance criteria than any other coating system. If less than 70% Kynar 500® is used in the paint composition, it will compromise the quality of the paint and its performance.

What are other commonly used paint resin systems in this industry?

The most commonly used paint systems available today are standard polyester and silicone-modified polyester resins. While these coatings are cost-effective and widely used, tests comparing them to Kynar 500® show that Kynar resin consistently outperforms them due to its superior adhesion, weather resistance, and extensive color options, making them a preferred choice for high quality metal roofing applications.

Why should I specify a Kynar 500® coating for my building?

Adding a new roof or building to your property is a major financial investment, and you want it to be both functional and attractive for many years to come. Nothing makes a bigger impact or says “quality maintenance” of your property like a sparkling new paint finish. When you get panels with a 70% Kynar 500® paint system, you are ensured of a “just painted” freshness year-after-year. With its exceptional durability and weather resistance, a Kynar 500® coating provides long-lasting protection and ensures that your building maintains its vibrant appearance, enhancing its overall value and aesthetic appeal.

How do I know Kynar 500® paint is better than other coatings?

Kynar 500® systems have earned their reputation as the coating of choice for building owners and architects worldwide. The proof lies in the staggering numbers: billions of square feet of building products coated with Kynar 500® systems can be found covering the facades of skyscrapers, airports, shopping malls, and various other structures spanning the globe. This extensive usage and widespread acceptance by industry professionals serve as a testament to the exceptional quality and performance of Kynar 500® paint. When it comes to achieving enduring beauty, unmatched durability, and unrivaled protection for your building, Kynar 500® paint stands out as the trusted and preferred choice.

Are Kynar 500® coatings important for all colors of roofing?

Absolutely. While Kynar 500® coatings provide protection for roofing of any color, the difference becomes much more visible on darker shades of roofing. The damaging effects of weathering, such as chalking and fading, are more noticeable on darker colors. For instance, as white metal panels fade and chalk, their weathered appearance still appears to be white. However, these aging processes can noticeably dull the overall appearance of the panels, emphasizing the importance of Kynar 500® coatings in maintaining the vibrancy and longevity of roofing systems.

Are Kynar 500® finishes new?

No. Kynar 500® finishes have been manufactured for over 40 years. Historically, these finishes have been primarily used in the high-rise market place. Although Kynar 500® PVDF paint technology is not new, the standardized use of these systems in the metal clad construction market is relatively new.

Benefits of Kynar 500® Coating

Kynar offers unsurpassed resistance to chalking and fading combined with ease of maintenance and chemical resistance. Kynar 500® coatings are highly resistant to chalking and fading due to the inherent nature of the resin’s chemistry. When the PVDF resins are combined with other durable ingredients, such as ceramic/inorganic pigmentation, the resulting paint’s resistance to chalking and fading is unequaled. In addition, Kynar 500® coatings are non-attractant to dirt and other airborne particles. If cleaning is necessary, your panels will clean up easily with a little soap and water. Kynar 500® coatings are also virtually unaffected by incidental contact with most chemicals or air pollution.

Chalking

Chalking happens when the sun’s UV rays cause the paint’s resin to slowly disintegrate into powder on the surface of the material, leaving behind a chalky substance and changing the appearance of the roofing over time. Because the damage typically comes from UV radiation, lighter colors will chalk more slowly than dark colors because they reflect more sunlight, and when they do chalk it will be less visible. Higher quality paint coatings such as our Kynar 500 roofing will withstand color fading and chalking for much longer than other metal paints.

Fading

Fading is a change in the color of the paint that occurs when the pigments in the paint begin to break down. This can be caused by a number of factors such as paint composition or low grade/highly pigmented paint. If the paint coating is not applied evenly to the material, fading will produce streaks of different shades as the paint is weathering unevenly, which is also a sign of low quality paint.
