Understanding Gauge Options in Unpainted Metal Roofing: What You Need to Know!

When selecting the right metal roofing, the gauge (thickness) of the metal plays a crucial role in durability, cost, and overall performance. In addition to the quality of the metal itself, the gauge impacts how well your roof withstands environmental elements over time.

At Koop Sheet Metal, we offer a variety of metal roofing options to suit different needs and budgets. Our expertise in metal roofing ensures you get the best materials for your project.

What is Gauge?

Gauge refers to the thickness of metal used in roofing. A lower gauge number means a thicker, more durable metal, while a higher gauge number indicates a thinner, more lightweight material.

Common Gauge Options:

30 Gauge Metal Roofing
  • The thinnest option commonly available, primarily used for temporary structures.
  • Most affordable but not ideal for long-term residential or commercial projects.
  • More susceptible to damage and requires extra care during installation.
28 Gauge Metal Roofing
  • Slightly thicker than 30 gauge, offering improved durability.
  • A budget-friendly choice with better resistance to dents and environmental damage.
  • Available in Galvalume and Galvanized 29″ corrugated (narrow) metal coatings.
26 Gauge Metal Roofing
  • A popular choice for both residential and commercial roofing.
  • Strikes a good balance between affordability and durability.
  • Available in three of our unpainted metal coatings: Galvalume, GalvaMag, and Alumag.
24 Gauge Metal Roofing
  • Thicker and more durable than 26 gauge, making it ideal for commercial and industrial applications.
  • Provides superior resistance to environmental wear and tear.
  • Currently only available in Unpainted in 3ft wide flat-sheeting or narrow Corrugated profiles.

How Does Gauge Affect Pricing?

Thicker metal (lower gauge) generally comes at a higher price because it provides better durability, longevity, and resistance to damage. Investing in a lower gauge metal can enhance the lifespan and performance of your roof, making it a smart long-term choice.

Choosing the Right Gauge for Your Needs

  • If you need a long-lasting and highly durable roof, opting for a lower gauge (thicker metal) is a wise investment despite the higher cost.
  • If budget is a primary concern, a 28-gauge option may offer a good balance between affordability and durability.
